Lost in the battle with commercial development are many short tracks rich in racing history. Too often these race tracks are demolished, making room for “progress.” Recently, however, the reverse has occurred. Columbia Speedway, one of the south’s most preeminent “back-in-the-day” short tracks was resurrected from its sleep, saved on the brink of its extinction to almost certain commercial development.
Columbia Speedway, located off Highway 321 in Cayce, SC, opened in 1948 and hosted regular top-level NASCAR races from 1951 through 1973. This venue witnessed numerous important “firsts” in NASCAR history.
